This session has been accepted for the 2021 IEEE ICETCI conference in Hyderabad, at August 25-27, 2021. It is supported by IEEE CIS Task Force: Intelligent Agents.
The recent development in miniaturizations of sensor technologies has pushed the widespread use of IoT technologies with the consequent increase of complex distributed systems. Based on the divide et impera principle, those “systems of systems” provide services by involving other devices empowered with specific skills through interaction among pairs, to serve the service request.
The design of these systems often achieves a natural mapping to the agent or multi-agent paradigm that provide consolidated task completion and problem-solving modules, as well as communication protocols. Agents overcome classical programs thanks to their inner capabilities to be autonomous and to adapt their behavior with the changing of the environment where agents live and interact.
The potential of these paradigms fosters when Computational Intelligence is exploited to enhance the agent's cognitive capabilities in acting as task-oriented components or controllers in complex and distributed systems. The synergy between computational intelligence and agent-based technology promises important implications in dynamic domains where the design and control of complex systems is a critical requirement. The agents encapsulate Computational Intelligence models to work with uncertain and incomplete information, to reason about the collected information, and to make decisions in order to reach effective solutions in dynamic and complex environments.
The special session will aim at providing a leading international forum to bring together researchers and practitioners from diverse fields, such as computer science, information technology, business, education, human factors, systems engineering, and robotics. The session will aim at examining the design principles and performance characteristics of various approaches in agent-based technology among many different domains, such as surveillance, monitoring, IoT, earth observations and any agent-oriented design systems; At the same time, it will aim at increasing the cross-fertilization of ideas on the development of autonomous agents and multi-agent systems by Computational Intelligence models.
By encouraging idea-sharing and discussions on the underlying logical, cognitive, physical, and sociological foundations as well as the enabling technologies of intelligent agents, the Special Session will foster the development of novel paradigms and advanced solutions in agent-based systems by Computational Intelligence techniques. This Symposium aims at bringing researchers and users from academia and industry together to report, interact and review the latest progress in this field, to explore future directions of research to a wider audience from diverse fields joining the ICECTI in Hyderabad, India and beyond.
This Special Session will bring together researchers from both industry and academia from the various disciplines contributing to the area on intelligent agents. Such disciplines include, but are not limited to:

Sabrina Senatore is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Salerno, Italy. She is the chair of IEEE CIS Task Force on Intelligent Agents (TFIA) and member of the IEEE CIS Intelligence Society Task Force: Fuzzy Systems for Web Intelligence; she is an associate editor of Information Science, Elsevier, and IEEE Transaction on Cybernetics; she is also an editorial board member of the Applied Intelligence Journal and International Journal of Computational Intelligence Theory and Practice. She is regularly part of Program Committees of many international conferences, and reviewer for many international journals. Her current research interests include the development and application of intelligent systems based on the combination of techniques from Soft Computing, Computational Intelligence, Text Mining, Information Retrieval, Semantic Web and Intelligent Agents, areas in which she has published extensively.
