TUTORIAL – HALF DAY SESSION
APPLICATION OF MACHINE LEARNING AND DEEP LEARNING
ALGORITHMS IN SOFTWARE DEFINED NETWORKING RESEARCH

Mode: Onsite

Abstract: Software Defined Networking (SDN) has attracted researchers in last decade to a greater extent mainly because of its flexibility, robustness, and also the potential for developing sophisticated applications. SDN also promises many easy to manage applications and easy management of networks.

It is envisioned that there will be huge applications of SDN in all areas of networking including Internet of Things (IoT), Edge/Fog/Cloud, Information Centric Networks, and Cognitive Radio Networks, so on so forth.

However, considering the basic protocol developments necessary for SDN, it is found that there are still several issues that need urgent attention. Quality of Services (QoS) is one such area of concern even for SDN.

Again considering the popularity of Machine Learning (ML) algorithms in present time, it is also found in literature that there has been wide applications of ML algorithms in developing various protocols applicable for SDN that include traffic classification, routing, ensuring QoS in SDN etc. Similarly, Deep Learning (DL) algorithms are also increasingly being applied in solving networking issues connected to SDN.

In this tutorial, emphasis is on exploring applications of ML and DL algorithms in SDN research. The tutorial shall start from the basics of SDN and extend up to current research challenges in SDN research. Basics of ML and DL algorithms shall be highlighted. Then how ML and DL algorithms are being applied in SDN research shall be explored. Appropriate taxonomy related to application of ML and DL algorithms in ensuring QoS in SDN shall also be discussed. Simulation tools necessary for such research shall also be elaborated.
